You\u2019re likely to hear Judy Feldman of OFS say a few things \u2013 should you ever speak with her about her role as Executive Director. The first, \u201cThe most important crop the Organic Farm School produces is farmers.\u201d The second, accompanied by a humble and disbelieving laugh, \u201cThis work directs us; control on a farm is an illusion.\u201d And the third, \u201cEveryone eats.\u201d Talking to Judy on a busy afternoon between grant writing sessions, meetings, and tours, she tells us she is no farmer herself; she builds community. She says farming is honourable and necessary work, and it has always been difficult \u2013 though arguably now more than ever \u2013 and the more resources, knowledge, and community we can equip our next generation of farmers with, the better for them and us all. We are a certified organic farm, incorporating regenerative methods with a focus on annual vegetable crops and small-scale seed production.<\/p>\n

The school takes students through a complete farming cycle, teaching them soil development, crop science, seed production, processing, business planning, and marketing. OFS offers each student time with experienced farm managers, instructors, and researchers, ensuring they have opportunities to develop their skills, learn from mistakes, practise caring for their minds and bodies, and lean into dreams for their futures. It is intense, time-consuming, and emotional work.<\/p>\n

Why do we do what we do at OFS? No one could answer this question with more consideration and awareness (two qualities that make her so superb at steering this ship) than Judy. She said, \u201cThe challenge farming has always presented is intensifying with each passing year. The physical requirements are never-ending.<\/p>\n

And the mental gym- nastics needed to deal with increasingly erratic weather, pests, diseases, and the changeability of markets can lead to frustration, exhaustion, and a sense of isolation, all of which, for a new farmer, too often add up to burnout and even abandonment of the craft entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen students finish their training and land in their fields, I am sure there are days when even our extensive support doesn\u2019t seem like enough. Continuous environmental variables beyond a farmer\u2019s control, and which no amount of training can truly prepare one to handle, have the power to turn thoughts of growth and income into dust. On those days, when OFS is no longer physically at their side, I hope they have built a strong community to lean on \u2013 and that their community rallies to support these individuals, who are working so hard to put food on their plates because, you guessed it, everyone eats.\u201d<\/p>\n

REGENERATIVE ORGANIC FARMING SUCCESS STORIES<\/h5>\n

On Whidbey Island, Washington, we have three thriving organic farms: Foxtail Farm, Deep Harvest Farm, and Sleepy Bee Farm, all established by OFS graduates \u2013 and many more OFS alums are running successful farming operations throughout the U.S.<\/p>\n

How to Clone this Content (Note: This is an H2)<\/h2>

To make the process of adding new articles to the WV site as simple as possible, please follow these steps.<\/p>

  1. Duplicate the Template Page<\/strong>
    1. In the EN-CA Admin Backend, navigate to Posts<\/li>
    2. Hover over the \"Article Template for Cloning\" post and click \"Duplicate This\"<\/li>
    3. Use the \"Quick Edit\" feature to quickly change the Title, Slug, Author, Category and Tags<\/li>
    4. Use the \"Edit\" link to open the post editor<\/li><\/ol><\/li>
    5. Configure the Header and Feature Images<\/strong>
      1. Change the full-width header image<\/li>
      2. Navigate to the \"Advanced\" tab of the image module and set the ALT TAG for the image<\/li>
      3. Remove the placeholder feature image<\/li>
      4. Change the feature header image, be sure to set the ALT TAG before setting the feature image<\/li><\/ol><\/li>
      5. Add the Written Content<\/strong>
        1. Copy the text from the PDF article into a PLAIN TEXT editor<\/li>
        2. Clean up the text, remove any extra spaces<\/li>
        3. Copy and paste the text from the PLAIN TEXT editor into the \"Text - Body Content\" module<\/li>
        4. Keep the text modification as simple as possible. Use H2-H6 titles, use blockquotes, etc<\/li>
        5. Modify the CSS in the Custom CSS section of the page (rather than changing the Divi content). Keep it simple by only marginally changing the font sizes and colours.<\/li>
        6. Add the EXCERPT to the post settings<\/li>
        7. Add TITLE tags for any links in the article<\/li>
        8. If there are references in the article
          1. Add those to the \"Text - References\" module. This module is set by default to use the proper font sizing and layout.<\/li>
          2. Add links to the references using the #references bookmark ID<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><\/li>
          3. Add Custom Images<\/strong>
            1. As simply as possible, add images from the PDF article into the HTML text<\/li>
            2. Don't get carried away with adding every image in-line as it appears in the magazine<\/li>
            3. Once an image is set, make sure you have an ALT TAG set for it<\/li><\/ol><\/li>
            4. Update the Yoast SEO Settings<\/strong>
              1. Set the focus keyphrase<\/li>
              2. Set the meta description<\/li>
              3. Set the related keyphrases (if appropriate)<\/li>
              4. Set related posts - preferably based on related phrases\/topics from this article<\/li><\/ol><\/li>
              5. Quick QA Checklist<\/strong>
                1. Preview the layout on mobile to make sure it reads well<\/li>
                2. Make sure all images have ALT Tags<\/li>
                3. Make sure all links have TITLE tags<\/li>
