It all began with a simple idea 10 years ago \u2013 give children the chance to plant a seed, watch it grow, and discover that they, too, can shape the world around them. Today, that small beginning has blossomed into a nationwide movement touching hundreds of thousands of young lives in classrooms and communities across Canada. \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/h5>\n
A visionary seed \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

On July 1, 2015, Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation\u00ae<\/sup><\/span> (PAS Foundation) became a federally registered charity, turning one man\u2019s childhood experience into a living vision. PAS is rooted in the belief that children are our future, and just as one seed can transform a landscape, so too one child can help change the world. Thus, PAS Foundation set out to create meaningful ways for young people to be inspired and experience the wonder of nature \u2013 and learn to change their world. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past decade, our mission has grown into a rich tapestry of programs in classrooms, libraries, daycares, gardens, farms, and homes across the country. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Growing a classroom movement<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

At the heart of this movement are three core educational programs inspired by two storybooks, authored by Roland Gahler, Plant a Seed & See What Grows<\/em> and What to Do with What You Grew.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

These educational programs turn stories into action as children read, reflect, plant, and nurture living things.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n

The scale of this impact is remarkable. PAS Foundation\u2019s programs have reached more than 600,000\u202fchildren in every corner of Canada, in over 8,500\u202fschools, public libraries, and daycare centres. More than 500,000\u202fstorybooks, workbooks, and colouring books, along with over 81,000\u202fseed packets, have been distributed free of charge, giving every child a tangible way to participate in the learning journey.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hands in the dirt\u2026 Hearts at work\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/h5>\n

Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation\u2019s programs are powered by one simple insight: children learn best when they can touch, see, smell, and experience the world for themselves. Through these programs, students plant seeds, track growth in their workbooks, and integrate what they see in the soil with what they learn in science, math, and language arts. Teachers praise these materials as engaging, curriculum-aligned, and especially valuable for diverse and bilingual classrooms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As observed by Roland Gahler, PAS Foundation\u2019s primary benefactor, \u201c…each planted seed becomes a quiet lesson in hope and inspiration, and even small actions, done with care, can grow into something extraordinary\u2026 even visionary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHands in the dirt\u201d is more <\/i>than a phrase \u2013 it is the\u00a0<\/i>heart of the experience.\u00a0<\/i>Children learn where their\u00a0<\/i>food comes from, how plants\u00a0<\/i>grow, and how their own\u00a0<\/i>care and patience can bring\u00a0<\/i>something to life. In the\u00a0<\/i>process, they build not only\u00a0<\/i>knowledge but confidence,\u00a0<\/i>curiosity, and a sense of\u00a0<\/i>responsibility for the Earth\u00a0<\/i>and their communities.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Gardens that change lives\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/h5>\n

Beyond the classroom, PAS Foundation\u2019s garden-granting program \u2013 Create a Garden: Inspire a Generation<\/em> \u2013 has transformed bare patches of ground into vibrant hubs of learning and connection. Funding has been provided to over 70 schools and community gardens, each one a living classroom where children plant, nurture, and harvest their own food. These gardens become places where students learn about nutrition, sustainability, teamwork, compassion, and problem-solving, all while experiencing the joy of tasting what they have grown themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, a garden grant to The Berry Family Childcare Centre and Dorothy Lynas Elementary School helped create a community garden that unites elders, families, and children in shared work and shared wonder. Children explore soil, seeds, and biodiversity, harvest peas and lettuce, join the Garden Guardians<\/em> program, and participate in events like Garden Open Days that build pride and a sense of belonging. As noted by Betsy Puff, PAS Foundation\u2019s garden program coordinator, \u201c…the garden becomes more than a learning space \u2013 it becomes a place where they feel seen, capable, and connected.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning beyond the classroom walls<\/b><\/h5>\n

Our Outdoor Learning Experiences<\/em> program takes children out to farms and other natural spaces, turning fields and barnyards into classrooms. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A single farm visit can be transformative for a child who has never stood in a vegetable field or held rich soil in their hands. It takes them through the seed-to-table journey, weaving science, health, and excitement into one unforgettable day. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kids\u2019 Corner \u2013 A safe place to explore and learn\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/h5>\n

At the same time, the Foundation\u2019s Kids Corner online hub keeps younger children engaged with nature from their homes and classrooms. The video series, such as Become an Explorer and Inquiring Minds, Inspiring Finds,<\/em> introduces kids to birds, whales, bees, bugs, and plants, as well as provides inspiration from young changemakers around the world, pairing inspiring stories with interactive activities and creative drawing lessons like Drawing with Brady<\/em>.<\/i> There are over 88 inspiring digital resources that help ensure that even when children cannot be in a garden or on a farm, they can still explore and dream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspiring future changemakers\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/h5>\n

What about older students? Through education bursaries, we assist undergraduates in botanical, agricultural, and health sciences to pursue their studies. These future changemakers will shape more sustainable food systems, work to address food insecurity, and rethink how food is grown and shared with the goal of building healthier communities. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each of the above statistics represents a child whose curiosity has been sparked, a teacher who feels more supported, a family that has grown closer over a shared garden bed, or a community that has found new reasons to gather, learn, and care for one another.     To make the process of adding new articles to the WV site as simple as possible, please follow these steps.<\/p>

    1. Duplicate the Template Page<\/strong>
      1. In the EN-CA Admin Backend, navigate to Posts<\/li>
      2. Hover over the \"Article Template for Cloning\" post and click \"Duplicate This\"<\/li>
      3. Use the \"Quick Edit\" feature to quickly change the Title, Slug, Author, Category and Tags<\/li>
      4. Use the \"Edit\" link to open the post editor<\/li><\/ol><\/li>
      5. Configure the Header and Feature Images<\/strong>
        1. Change the full-width header image<\/li>
        2. Navigate to the \"Advanced\" tab of the image module and set the ALT TAG for the image<\/li>
        3. Remove the placeholder feature image<\/li>
        4. Change the feature header image, be sure to set the ALT TAG before setting the feature image<\/li><\/ol><\/li>
        5. Add the Written Content<\/strong>
          1. Copy the text from the PDF article into a PLAIN TEXT editor<\/li>
          2. Clean up the text, remove any extra spaces<\/li>
          3. Copy and paste the text from the PLAIN TEXT editor into the \"Text - Body Content\" module<\/li>
          4. Keep the text modification as simple as possible. Use H2-H6 titles, use blockquotes, etc<\/li>
          5. Modify the CSS in the Custom CSS section of the page (rather than changing the Divi content). Keep it simple by only marginally changing the font sizes and colours.<\/li>
          6. Add the EXCERPT to the post settings<\/li>
          7. Add TITLE tags for any links in the article<\/li>
          8. If there are references in the article
            1. Add those to the \"Text - References\" module. This module is set by default to use the proper font sizing and layout.<\/li>
            2. Add links to the references using the #references bookmark ID<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><\/li>
            3. Add Custom Images<\/strong>
              1. As simply as possible, add images from the PDF article into the HTML text<\/li>
              2. Don't get carried away with adding every image in-line as it appears in the magazine<\/li>
              3. Once an image is set, make sure you have an ALT TAG set for it<\/li><\/ol><\/li>
              4. Update the Yoast SEO Settings<\/strong>
                1. Set the focus keyphrase<\/li>
                2. Set the meta description<\/li>
                3. Set the related keyphrases (if appropriate)<\/li>
                4. Set related posts - preferably based on related phrases\/topics from this article<\/li><\/ol><\/li>
                5. Quick QA Checklist<\/strong>
                  1. Preview the layout on mobile to make sure it reads well<\/li>
                  2. Make sure all images have ALT Tags<\/li>
